    Description

    Strategy & Tactics #33
    Winter War
    The Russo-Finnish Conflict
    November 1939-March 1940
During the summer of 1939, the USSR became concerned with the growing power of Nazi Germany, and began acquiring buffer areas from other countries (such as Poland). The soviets were worried about the exposed positions of Leningrad and Murmansk, if Hitler moved into Finland. Thus they requested that Finland turn over land north of Leningrad and some land for a base on the Gulf of Finland. In return, the Soviets would give up some rather worthless forest land in Eastern Karelia, and sign trade and defense treaties. Finland rejected the proposal and with three million people, prepared to defend herself against 150 million Soviets. The ensuing three and one-half month campaign was a classic of hard fighting in a hostile environment.
The Winter War was fought in a sparsely populated, forested, swampy area with very harsh winter climate. The environment had much to do with strategy and performance in the War.  Because of the lack of roads through the lake and swamp topography, the use of heavy mechanized equipment was more of a hindrance than an advantage. The very cold winter coimate and deep snow interfered with the use of vehicles and horses. Thus, advantage lay with the side whose troops were trained an equipped for the winter, and who were made mobile by skies rather than bogged down with materiel.
Winter War, the game, is a two-player simulation comprising all of the essential elements of the actual campaign.  The Soviet Army is attempting to invade and occupy territorial/political objectives in Finland and, of course, the Finnish army is attempting to stop them. Given cities and areas on the map are worth a certain amount of Victory Points to the Soviet Player and it is by accumulating enough or too few of these points that the Soviet Player wins or loses.
Scenarios (and optional What-If situations) include:
    French/British Allies land at Petsamo
Allied Units cross Sweden and Norway
    Scandinavian Invasion by the Allies
    Better Soviet Mobilization
    German Threat
    Contains:
    Rules
    22" X 34"  map
    120 die cut counters
Each game turn represents ten days of real time
Each hex represents 20 kilometers in real distance
Counters represent Corps, Divisions, Brigades, Regiments, Battalions, patrols and Headquarters
