This unique item checks off multiple boxes for collectability. Lets start with the recipient. Amon Barness was born on Oct. 16, 1924, and was fairly well-known. You can find his biography book on Amazon. From his Obit:
'A man of immeasurable talent, charisma and idealism, he lived an extraordinary life that included service in the Hagana in the 1940s, immigrating to the USA with just 0, and eventually becoming a captain of industry and philanthropy. He was a self-made man who epitomized the American dream but never forgot his roots. He channeled his rare talents and success as a businessman to advance the cause of education and strengthen the ties between the United States and Israel. He received 18 separate mentions in the Congressional Record and served as the chairman of Israel Bonds for the greater Los Angeles area for seven years. He was the Founder-Chairman Emeritus of the Fund for Higher Education, which supported over one hundred colleges and universities in the United States and all seven universities in Israel. With an investment of ,000 dollars, he co-founded Daylin, Inc. (NYSE), a Fortune 500 company, and was its chairman until 1975. He later founded Handy Dan Home Improvement Center (OTC), the precursor of Home Depot. He served on President Lyndon Johnson's Youth Opportunity Campaign Council and was President of the Fund for Job Corps Graduates, established by him and then Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. At his retirement from the Chairmanship of Daylin and Handy Dan, the two companies had 600 locations and 16,000 employees in the United States and Europe. In 1975 he formed Trans International Management Corp., which successfully negotiated major contracts with various foreign governments and represented several United States multi-national corporations. He received an Honorary Doctorate from Stonehill College and an Honorary Fellowship from Tel Aviv University. He was honored by the Catholic Church when Cardinal Tisserant named him Knight Commander of Merit of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He served on the Boards of Governors of Tel Aviv University and the Weizmann Institute of Science. He was an avid world traveler, linguist, philatelist, and philanthropist. He also authored an autobiography titled "Partners."
So, this Birthday Edition was likely ordered by someone obviously close to him at time of his birth or likely a short time later. The New York World was out of business by 1931 and it's unlikely they would have participating in this type of offering - which we cannot find anywhere else. So, in all likelihood this was made in 1924 or shortly thereafter. The Brown Leather Portfolio itself measures 19 x 13 x 1.25" with gold 'The World.' embossed lettering and Barness name and birthdate date in lower right corner. Within the portfolio there is pocket to hold the newspaper. Back cover is blank.
The newspaper from the birth date is two sections totaling 32 pages with Ohio State Univ. Library Stamp. We have not opened up the newspaper as it appears untouched since 1924. However, cover features multiple stories of the ZR-3 German Zeppelin landing in Lakehurst, NJ. So, it contains some interesting reading and photos.
Another thing worth noting the Director of the Newspaper Collectors Society was Bill Blackbeard. Unsure if he is related to the Bill Blackbeard of comic strip fame, but it's certainly quite a coincidence. So, this item has numerous elements which make it quite interesting beyond its obvious rarity. Condition of portfolio is very good there is small indentation on cover, and 1/4" puncture, plus minor scuffs. Newspaper is very good some minor wear along edges probably from being removed (not opened) from portfolio pocket. Zoom in on pics as part of description. This will ship fast and FREE signature required. An awesome unusual newspaper-related collectible. Contact us any questions we try our best and please follow our store if you like rare and unique.
