stamp in New York, NY, marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Metropolitan Opera. Ken Davies of Madison, CT based the design of the stamp on a combination of features from both the original and the new Metropolitan Opera buildings. In the background appears the proscenium arch, which topped the stage in the original building. Superimposed upon it is the 5-arched entrance to the present building.
The Metropolitan Opera is one of the leading operatic organizations in the world, and includes singers, instrumentalists, and other artists and technicians who participate directly in its productions. The "Met", as it is popularly called, opened its doors October 22, 1883. The original Metropolitan Opera House was designed by architect Josiah Cleaveland Cady, and was located at Broadway and 39th Street. The company moved into the new Metropolitan Opera House in 1966. Since its original opening night in 1883, the "Met" has enhanced the lives of millions of Americans with its performances in New York, on national tours and concerts, and through radio broadcasts and telecasts.
