    Arcinella cornuta
    Pair FOSSILS –
    PAINTED
What did fossil shells look like in the
    Pliocene
    Seas
?  A new science is developing that can predict the true colors of fossil shells.    Oxidation (caused either naturally by exposure to sunlight or artificially by soaking in bleach) causes formally pigmented fossil shells to fluoresence.  Under a UV light, areas where the former pigment was most pronounced, lights up.  The dark pigments (black, brown, blue) light up white.  Lighter pigments (white, yellow, orange) don’t light up as much, remain dark.
    One pair of lower graded
    Arcinella cornuta
has been painted to show what the pigments could have been like on this Pliocene fossil.
Presuming 5 million years ago, the
    Pliocene
    Seas
were much cleaner and unspoiled by humans.  Colors for animals and shells would have been much brighter.
Colors or pigments were chosen by the artist from intuition and deductions from recent living shell representatives.
Fossilized pair, painted measures : 58 mm
    Fossils were collected from the
SMR Aggregate Mine, Pit #14, Sarasota, Florida in the Tamiami Formation, Pliocene Age.
