These newspapers contain front page reports on various
DEATH RAY MACHINES
supposedly
invented by 2 Americans and considered by the US military in the aftremath of the German invasion of Poland and the beginning of WWII.
One has a large front page photo and caption of Dr Antonio Longoria and his DEATH RAY MACHINE. The other has a front page heading and long report: "Details of Denonator Ray Given (US) War Department for Possible test, Development." This Death Ray was invented by Otto Mohr and consisted of gamma and Beta Rays.
The death ray or death beam was a theoretical particle beam or electromagnetic weapon of the 1920s through the 1930s that was claimed to have been invented independently by Nikola Tesla, Edwin R. Scott, Harry Grindell Matthews, and Graichen, Antonio Longoria, Otto Mohr, as well as others. In 1957, the National Inventors Council was still issuing lists of needed military inventions that included a death ray.
Although the concept of a death ray was never put into action, it fueled science fiction stories and led to the science fiction concept of the hand held raygun used by fictional heroes such as Flash Gordon. In Alfred Noyes' 1940 novel The Last Man (US title: No Other Man), a death ray developed by a German scientist named Mardok is unleashed in a global war and almost wipes out the human race. Along with George Lucas' science fiction story "Star Wars".
